The Advantages of Pen and Paper

By on March 4, 2023

I love notebooks – and not the computer kind. I also love fountain pens. In fact, my preferred method of note-taking is with pen and paper.

Old school (and new) with refreshment

Taking notes with a pen and notebook has several advantages over typing notes on a computer or tablet. Some of the key benefits include:

  1. Improved retention and recall: Writing notes by hand engages the brain in a different way than typing, which can improve retention and recall of the material being studied. Research has shown that students who take handwritten notes often perform better on tests than those who type their notes.
  2. Reduced distractions: When taking notes on a computer, it can be easy to get distracted by email notifications, social media updates, or other digital distractions. Writing by hand eliminates these distractions and allows you to focus solely on the task at hand.
  3. More creativity and flexibility: Writing by hand allows for more flexibility and creativity than typing on a computer. You can easily draw diagrams, highlight important points, or make connections between different ideas without being limited by the formatting options of a digital platform.
  4. More personalized notes: Handwritten notes are more personal than digital notes and can be customized to fit your unique learning style. You can use different colors, fonts, and sizes to emphasize important points, or add your own thoughts and ideas in the margins.
  5. Improved handwriting skills: Writing by hand can also improve your handwriting skills, which can be useful in other areas of your life, such as writing letters or filling out forms.

Overall, taking notes with a pen and notebook can be a valuable tool for learning and retaining information, while also providing a break from digital distractions and fostering creativity and personalisation in your note-taking process.
